“Less Pain, Less Swelling, Faster Healing – My new Standard in Patient Care”
Witnessing the happy smiles of his patients fills Dr Chav Bunhean with purpose and joy. Since adopting piezo technology, he has achieved a new level of precision in bone cutting. Many of his patients report about fewer postoperative complications and higher overall satisfaction. With the Piezomed module from W&H, Dr Bunheans workflow has transformed – allowing him to work more efficiently, more gently, and with consistently better outcomes. In the following interview, he discusses piezo technology and the advantages of W&H’s unique modular system.

Dr Bunhean, could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us a bit about Roomchang Dental Hospital?
Dr Bunhean: I became a graduated dentist in 2000 and completed my Master’s degree in Implantology in 2016. I joined Roomchang Dental Hospital in 2004 as the fifth dentist, and today the team has grown to more than 40 clinicians. Roomchang now operates five branches, with the main facility serving as a fully equipped dental hospital. The 10 story building houses around 50 dental treatment units and dedicated surgical rooms, with a CBCT scanner on every floor.
When did you first start bringing piezo technology into your surgical routine?
Dr Bunhean: I first started using piezo technology around 2013. At that time, I didn’t like it very much because the technology hadn’t yet been matured. The workflow seemed slow, the tips were bulky, and overall, it wasn’t convenient to use.
Since switching to the W&H Piezomed, I’ve come to value piezo technology for its safe power delivery, superior cutting quality as well as its slim and well-angled tips. Even less experienced dentists quickly gain confidence, and the refined tip design allows efficient bone cutting and easy access to hard-to reach areas.
The Piezomed module allows surgery to be performed with a great deal of precision and minimal trauma. What are the specific benefits for patients?
Dr Bunhean: Traditional bone harvesting can be traumatic for patients, often causing significant swelling or postoperative bleeding. Since adopting piezo technology, these complications have been significantly reduced. Many of my patients report about less pain, minimal swelling and faster healing. Although the procedure itself may take slightly longer than with conventional techniques, the postoperative benefits are substantial.
In which cases do you prefer to use the W&H Piezomed module?
Dr Bunhean: I use the Piezomed module for bone harvesting, bone cutting, and most crestal sinus lift procedures because it offers exceptional control and protects the Schneiderian membrane. Consequently, implant placement is possible even with only 3 mm of residual bone, and my cases consistently show smooth postoperative outcomes, so far without any patient complaints.
I also rely on piezo surgery for complex wisdom tooth extractions, as it allows safe bone removal and tooth sectioning when the roots are deep or close to the nerve.

The W&H system combines an implantology motor and piezo surgery in a single device. How important is the modularity of surgical systems to you?
Dr Bunhean: Modularity is tremendly valuable in daily practice. Most dental clinics have limited space, so using multiple stand-alone units is impractical. The W&H system integrates rotary and piez o technology in one compact design, making it more space-efficient and easier to handle during surgery. With a single foot control, I can switch between functions in a flash, allowing me to focus on the patient. My team also benefits: during surgery I usually work with three assistants, and they appreciate not having to constantly move or change devices.

Dr Bunhean, you also use the Osstell ISQ system to assess implant stability. In which clinical situations do you find ISQ measurements particularly valuable?
Dr Bunhean: ISQ measurements provide reliable insights into primary stability, which is essential when I have to decide between immediate and delayed loading. Without an objective ISQ value, it is difficult to make a sound, evidence based decision. Therefore, incorporating stability measurement has become an integral part of my workflow and crucial to achieving consistently professional results.
Dr Bunhean, may I ask one last question: which aspects of your profession do you find most personally inspiring?
Dr Bunhean: Providing patients with a better quality of life fills me with great respect and gratitude.
In Cambodia, patients greet me warmly wherever I go, and their smiles make me proud of my work.
I often tell my children that dentistry, while demanding, is also deeply rewarding – patients truly value our treatment and sometimes show their appreciation in unexpected ways, for example, paying for a meal without saying a word.
When you provide high quality treatment, patients not only trust you but often form genuine personal connections. Many have become friends or almost like family, inviting us to their gatherings.
This appreciation and the human connection are among the most fulfilling aspects of my profession.

About Dr Chav Bunhean
Dr Chav Bunhean has been with Roomchang since 2004. Before, he worked in another private dental clinic in Phnom Penh for three years. He graduated as Doctor of Dental Science from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Health Sciences in 2000, and additionally earned a Diploma in Periodontology in 2004.
Later, in 2008, he received a certificate in Implantology from Malaysia. Moreover, in 2016, he obtained a Master of Science in Oral Implantology from the Goethe Frankfurt University, Germany and became Oral Implantology professor in Cambodia.
He focuses on Periodontal Disease Treatment, Dental Implantology, and Full Mouth Rehabilitation because he finds great joy in helping patients regain a healthy life and a radiant smile.
